Korosuke's Face MODThis Face MOD is my signature creation.
The Kitten Face was crafted based on the facial features of Kitten NPCs, characteristically featuring a larger head, big eyes, and an adorable appearance. Matching hairstyles, headgear, and face accessories fitted for the enlarged head are also included. Face Options include Hyur ears, Elezen ears, Kitten ears, Viera ears, and more, allowing for "Smol" representations across various races.
Rather than a simple Face MOD, this is a major overhaul—it practically converts Midlanders into a whole new "Kitten" race.
History of the Kitten Face MODVer. 0 (Dec 2021 –) Trial and Error
The head size of the current Kitten Face MOD is based on the dimensions of the very first kitten face I created. The reason the scale ratio for Smart Scaling is a seemingly random 1.442x is because, back then, I adjusted every single proportion by eye and by hand. This era was purely defined by endless trial and error.Ver. 1 (May 2022 –) Kitten Rise
In Ver. 0, the kitten face was assigned to headgear and the hair was assigned to neckwear. However, I decided to directly replace the actual Midlander face and hair with the kitten face and hair. It was a complete "kittenization" of Midlanders! With more face and hair variations available, plus the ability to combine them with headgear like glasses, customization options for the kitten face expanded significantly.Ver. 2 (Apr 2023 –) Becoming a Mega-MOD
I expanded the scope of the kitten face replacement from Midlander player characters to Midlander NPCs as well. This transformed it into a massive "Mega-MOD," featuring 30 types of kitten faces and 100 styles of kitten hair.Ver. 3 (Oct 2023 –) From "My MOD" to "Everyone's MOD"
I realized that the kitten face size was actually too large compared to the actual in-game kitten NPCs. Well, to be honest, I had noticed it way earlier, but I turned a blind eye because remaking it was such a hassle. In Ver. 3, I finally got off my butt and released a updated version with a scaled-down face size. Immediately, I was met with fierce backlash—"Why did you make it smaller?!" It came from users who had grown attached to the original size, as well as creators who were making accessories tailored specifically to it. That was the moment it hit me: what started as a personal project had become everyone's MOD.
As a result, I split the project into two separate versions: Kitten Face (Large) for the original, and Kitten Face (Small) for the new size.Ver. 4 (Feb 2024 –) Expanding Face Options
Previously, faces with different eye shapes or mouth shapes were created as separate individual assets. I updated them to use shape key deformations instead. Features like kitten ears—which used to be equipped as external accessories—were added directly into the face options. This allowed a single face to express a wide variety of looks without relying on external assets.Ver. 5 (Jul 2024 –) Rebuilding Everything from Scratch
The graphics update in Patch 7.0 brought massive changes to character faces. Texture specifications for faces and eyes were overhauled, new meshes for tongues and teeth were added, and facial bones tripled from 20 to 60. In short, all previous face MODs stopped working, so I had to rebuild everything from scratch.
While remaking them, I adjusted the head geometry to support Smart Scaling. This enabled me to execute size adjustments for face accessories, headgear, and hairstyles using a single Blender macro. What used to take tens of minutes was done in seconds!Ver. 6 (Apr 2025 –) Farewell to Kitten Face (Small) & All Headgear Scaled
I reconsidered the two-version structure (Large and Small) that I had maintained up to Ver. 5, and consolidated everything into just the Large size. "Kitten Face (Large)" was renamed to simply "Kitten Face," and updates for "Kitten Face (Small)" were discontinued. To be completely frank, maintaining two different sizes meant doing the exact same work twice whenever I added a new face or hair, which was an immense burden.
On top of that, I successfully finished scaling every single headgear item to fit the kitten face size. I achieved this by resizing all 1,000+ items one by one. Nobody asked me to do this—it was pure self-satisfaction. I actually did it!! Someone praise me!Before creating the Kitten Face MOD, I was just an obscure MOD creator.
The MODs I made received no attention, nobody used them, and nobody left any feedback.
But at the end of the day, making MODs is all about personal satisfaction, so I thought, "that's just how it goes."Then the Kitten Face MOD blew up. So many people used it and shared their thoughts with me.
More and more creators started making MODs specifically for the Kitten Face, and my connection with the community expanded.
If you're a fellow modder, you probably understand—having your own MOD spark an entire ecosystem was something I had always dreamed of, so I was beyond happy.
Even if I am eventually forgotten over time, I'll still feel a little proud thinking, "Hey, I started all of this!"Thank you to everyone who has loved the Kitten Face MOD!
